360° Videos

At the outset of this project, one of our aims was to explore the use of Virtual Reality (VR) in Global Competence learning. One of the advantages of VR, or simulated activity, is that it provides a degree of inclusivity for those who are unable to travel – which was most of us during the COVID-19 pandemic – in order to experience perspectives, cultures, places and peoples that are outside of our normal lives.

In early March 2020, three of the project team took part in a workshop in Florence, Italy to learn how to use virtual reality in the form of 360° videos and photos. We learned not only about the different purposes of both these formats, but also how they can be used pedagogically to support learning.

Unfortunately, due to COVID-19, we were not able to pick this up again until the last few months of the project. But we are pleased to announce that we have now created three 360° videos complete with interactions for a fully immersive experience if you have an appropriate headset with hand controls.

The videos can be seen below and consist of three different classrooms, one in New York, one in Brussels and one in England. The interactions embedded in the video explain why the classrooms are as they are and thus highlight cultural differences in not only the way teaching and learning take place in these difference countries, but also something about the values of those countries as well. These 360° videos are an initial attempt and exploring how Global Competence can be taught using innovative methods and it is hoped that these will form the basis of our next study where we will move beyond this pilot exploration.

When watching the videos below, please note, you will not see the interactions unless you download them and view them through a headset with hand controls.
